Each year, retailers sell scores of sexy nurse costumes for Halloween, and they're among the top-selling adult outfits, according to publications like Romper and Entertainment Tonight. But RNs say the depictions perpetuate stereotypes that nursing is low-skilled and assistant work for women, when in reality many nurses have doctorate degrees and contribute to critical medical research. Quebec's order of nurses launched a social media campaign asking people to consider the perception of their profession when choosing their Halloween costumes. The sexy nurse costume "perpetuates sexist and degrading stereotypes and fantasies about nurses," says the campaign's leader, Luc Mathieu. He adds that it can lead to workplace harassment, and he wants people to choose more respectful costumes this Oct. 31. | |
