The Shepherd's Pie is known by several different names. Also called Cottage Pie. And the French version known as hachis Parmentier. Although ground lamb and beef are the most common. It can be made with any ground/minced meat, (or non-meat protein substitute) if you are a vegan. Covered by a layer of Mashed Potatoes and then baked.

This Shepherd's Pie Recipe will Feed 4-5 People

Ingredients:

1lb ground Lamb (You can substitute any ground meat)

12oz (about 340.19 g) bag of Frozen Vegetables. (Peas, Carrots, Corn, and Green Beans)

Approximately 4oz (about 113.4 g) of Instant Mashed Potatoes

½ cup of Mushrooms

½ cup of chopped Red Onion

½ cup of chopped Scallions

Olive or Avocado Oil

1 to 1½ tbsp. of butter/margarine

2 cups of water

1 cup Favorite Shredded Cheese

Add oil to a 12-to-14-inch Frying Pan. Preheat while crumbling lamb into oil. Seasoning to Taste. When the Lamb is browned, add Mushrooms, Red Onions, and Scallions. Sautee until Onions and Scallions are soft. While this is cooking combine water and margarine in 4 Cup Saucepan and heat until butter/margarine is melted, and water is just starting to boil, add instant Potatoes and mix thoroughly. Set it aside. In an 8-12 inch Casserole Dish combine the Lamb, Mushrooms, Red Onions and Scallions with the Frozen Vegetables. Cover this with the shredded cheese, leaving enough cheese to put on top of mashed potatoes. Spread Mashed potatoes over top. Sprinkle the rest of the cheese over top of mashed potatoes. Bake in oven at 3500 F for 30 minutes, or until cheese on top is melted and potatoes start to brown. Enjoy.

Add 2 Slices of Garlic Bread Per Guest

For this you will need a loaf of French Bread, preferably fresh baked. Slice loaf into 1-inch slices, butter and apply Garlic and herb seasoning to both sides. Then apply generous amount of grated Parmesan cheese to the top. Place directly on the middle rack of oven. (No cookie sheet) They will make the bottom of the bread soggy. Bake at 3500 F for 12-15 minutes or until edges start to brown. Prepare at least 2 slices for each guest.

For larger gatherings, recipe can be doubled to make 2 Pies. Leftovers, if any, can be refrigerated and reheated for breakfast or lunch the next day.

Now Pair this with a Fine Wine and you have a Meal that you and your Guest will not forget.

A Pinot Noir, Chianti, and Côtes-du-Rhône or any Red Wine with earthy, spicy, and acidic qualities pairs best with the ingredients of a Shepherd's Pie. While a buttery Chardonnay will complement the outer pie crust. Please check out our pages on Wine Magic for more pairing ideas.
