Perinatal psychiatry Perinatal psychiatry focuses on the mental health care of women during pregnancy and the postpartum period. This includes prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of psychiatric illnesses that occur during pregnancy and the postpartum period. Some common psychiatric illnesses that occur in the perinatal period include depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, bipolar disorder and post partum psychosis. A mother’s mental health has an impact on her pregnancy, the post partum period/recovery and her infant’s health. Therefore, for pregnant and post partum patients, as well as those considering pregnancy, I conduct a careful review of psychiatric symptoms, medications and lifestyle with the goal of a collaborative approach to achieve optimal control of symptoms in the mother.
