How can you make your garden stand out this summer?

Gardens are there to be used, right? It doesn’t matter if they large, small, grass, paved or anything else. Especially as the weather gets nicer, we want to spend more time outdoors with our family and friends. A classic example is the barbecue but breakfast in the sun and drinks in the evening are also popular options.

The thing with gardens are they can be a lot of work, more so for those who buy a property where the seller doesn’t have much of a green thumb. Believe it or not, this can be a big factor for some buyers who are looking for an outdoor space they can use straight away. Whether you have a green thumb or not, it’s worth putting time into your garden to make sure you can use it but also a buyer can from the moment they move in. We’ve got some ideas for you.

What is it used for?

The first thing to ask yourself is; what do you use your garden for? Is it mainly for your children to play in? Do you use it as a social space for guests? Do you like to eat outside? Are you growing your own vegetables or do you enjoy floral displays?

You don’t just have to have one answer, although the size of your garden will play a part in this. Lawns work well for décor and playing space but patios or decking are great for furniture for you to sit and relax, whether alone or with company. If you really don’t have a green thumb then making your garden a courtyard is an easy to maintain option.

Just don’t forget space for some plants, trees or shrubs for that bit of life and colour!

Work out how much space you have

This isn’t as easy as just measuring the garden but that is a part of it. Once you know what you use it for, or what it could be used for, it’s time to work out those dimensions. How big a patio do you want? How much grass? Is there a shed?

These questions and more give you an idea of how to lay out the garden to make it not only the most effective use of space but also looking good for potential buyers. Less space isn’t a bad thing, remember, you just have to be more careful with your plans.

The shape plays a part, too. Is it a long rectangle or are you on a corner? When do you get the best light? All of these factors will play a part in making sure you get the most out of it every day – and as such, buyers will as well.
